It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Tata Joseph Kalamba, one of the founding members of the Congolese Community of Minnesota. Tata Kalamba passed away peacefully on January 15 at the age of 78, surrounded by his family.
Tata Kalamba arrived in Minnesota in 1998 and immediately began organizing Congolese families in the Twin Cities. He was instrumental in the founding of CongoMN in 2005 and served on the Board of Directors for 15 years. Known for his wisdom, generosity, and beautiful singing voice, he was a beloved father figure to the entire community.
“Tata Kalamba taught us that community is not just where you come from, but what you build together,” said Board Chair Didier Lwamba. “His legacy lives in every program, every event, and every family we have served.”
A memorial service was held at Lake Nokomis Lutheran Church, attended by over 400 community members. CongoMN has established the Joseph Kalamba Memorial Fund to support elder programs in his honor.
Donations can be made to the memorial fund at info@congomn.org.
